At the age of fifteen, Faiz won first prize for his ghazal in a school poetry competition. But surprisingly, Chhajju Ram was very happy, because the poem made him famous in the school. The soft-hearted Faiz was very sorry that Chhajju Ram must have been hurt because of him and went and apologized to him.
The next day at the school, there was a hullabaloo due to his poem. Then he asked him to write a satire on his friend Chhajju Ram, and Faiz wrote it as per his understanding. A friend of his brother, Tufail Ahmad Khan, who was three years older than him, asked Faiz, ‘do you only read poetry, or do you write it as well?’ Faiz replied, ‘I haven’t, so far’. The story is that Faiz had been interested in reading novels and poetry since his school days. Later, Firaq became associated with the Allahabad University as an English Lecturer.įaiz Ahmed Faiz's poetry began when he was in seventh grade, and his first shot was a satire. He was in Agra Jail where there were also some other prisoners who, too, were fond of poetry and literature. He was sentenced to one and a half years in jail and fined Rs.
Firaq was also arrested in connection with boycotting the visit of the Princess of Wales to India. But because he had joined the freedom struggle group, he resigned from the employement of the British Government. All this while, the letters that Faiz and Alys wrote to one another in English were published in Urdu under the title “Saliben Mere Dariche Mein”, and later in English under the title "Dear Heart".Īscribed to the name of Raghupati Sahaye 'Firaq Gorakhpuri' is his distinct tone of poetry, deep affection for nature and beauty, interesting and unapologetic conversations, moody temperament, restless family life, and much more something which has been extensively written about.īut did you know that after graduating in 1918, he was elected to the ICS and was also nominated by the government as Deputy Collector. During the trying term of 1951-1955, when Faiz was accused and imprisoned in the Rawalpindi Conspiracy case, Alys provided for her two daughters and squared up to their financial expenses. Renowned poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz was married in 1941 to British citizen Alys George in Srinagar and this knot was tied by Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah.
